The Carolina Young Birders Club: A Community Supported by the Carolina Bird Club
Founded in 2013 by Matthew Janson, the Carolina Young Birders Club (CYBC) thrives thanks to the generous donations from our community, with funds managed by our 'parent' organization, the Carolina Bird Club (CBC). While the CBC doesn't directly fund us, their support has been instrumental in our foundation and continues to be a vital resource for our growth and success.
Our mission is to connect like-minded young birders and to nurture the next generation of birders and ornithologists. We are grateful for the ongoing support and collaboration with the CBC, which helps us achieve our goals.

Our mascot bird is the Prothonotary Warbler, Prothonotaria citrea. This stunning warbler is rather easy to find in the majority of North and South Carolina, where it inhabits wooded streams, swamps, floodplains, and other wet, wooded habitats. It is unique among the eastern warblers for nesting in tree cavities, often created by woodpeckers or nuthatches. If placed in the appropriate habitat, Prothonotary Warblers will even use nest boxes with a 1 1/4" hole. The unusual name comes from Roman prothonotaries, which wore bright yellow robes. Another name for these birds is Golden Swamp Warbler.
The logo for the Carolina Young Birders Club was made by artist, photographer, and birder Evan Lipton of Milton, Massachusetts. You can see more of Evan's work at his website Avian Obsession.
